Welcome on the blog page of the website Mercy’s Fancy !
Here you will find the latest news, events information, and some anecdotes about my daily life as a small business runner and creator.
History
I created my brand in 2015 when I took up jewellery making again. I had practised this as a hobby when I was young but I'd had to leave it due to my lack of financial means as a schoolgirl then student. When I finally reached some financial stability, I realised one life would never be enough to wear all the jewellery I was making and my next issue was going to be the lack of space. Asking myself 'Whatever will I do with all this?', I then decided to answer: 'I should try to sell it.'
I opened in 2015 une boutique en ligne sur Etsy, that I still run today. Then, in 2016, I set up my official small business, then my own e-commerce website.
Earning a living with craftmanship is hard. Personally, I opted for a compromise, like many other creators I know: I keep a part-time job and my jewellery business is only a (low) side revenue. It allows me to keep my creative work out of any financial pressure and to remain as free as possible in running my business, even if a salary job has its drawbacks too.
I am mostly self-taught in jewellery. I started by simply assembling beads and charms, et since then I've been learning metal smithing by taking training courses and also making good use of my art studies for etching.
A Fancy
Why does a French creator have an English brand name? First, because I started on Etsy when it was not very well-known in France. One had to adapt to an English-speaking audience in order to be remembered by clients. An alslo, I am happy to admit that I love the English language and, after many years of practising, I can speak and write it quite well.
My brand name is Mercy’s Fancy because my first name translates in English to mercy, and fancy evokes both someone's fancy, as in whim, and being fancy, as in chic, sophisticated. So it reads both as Mercy’s fancy, the fancy of Mercy, or as Mercy is fancy, Mercy is chic. You have to admit the pun is fancy... and it rhymes, too!
